Syros Leads Europe in Water Reuse Innovation for Agriculture

A recent meeting in Syros, as part of the EU-funded RECREATE project, highlighted the innovative work being done by DEYAS (Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Syros) in collaboration with partners including the National Technical University of Athens and the NCSR “Demokritos,” with active participation from geologist Ioannis Zarikos. The project focuses on alternative water resources through the reuse of tertiary-treated wastewater to enrich local aquifers and support agricultural irrigation in the water-scarce area of Vari. Farmers have reported improved water quality, higher crop yields, and reduced salinity in wells, leading to significant local satisfaction. The initiative has positioned Syros as a European pilot for sustainable water reuse, offering a promising model for other drought-prone regions.
