Advancing Climate Adaptation through Interoperable Digital Twins: Highlights from the Joint Climate Adapt 4 EOSC & FAIR2Adapt Workshop at EGI2025

Published by Dimitra Panou on

On 3rd of July, a joint workshop was held in Santander during the #EGI2025 Conference, co-organised by Climate Adapt 4 EOSC and FAIR2Adapt-EOSC, bringing together experts to discuss data-driven approaches for climate change adaptation.

👥 With over 20 engaged participants, the event sparked meaningful discussions on data interoperability and digital tools for climate change adaptation.

🔹 A highlight for Climate Adapt 4 EOSC was the presentation by Thanasis Sfetsos (NCSR “Demokritos”), project coordinator, who introduced the Use Case 1 (UC1): the Just-CURS service—our citizen-informed digital twin designed to tackle urban heat risks. The case of Aigaleo was showcased as a real-world example of integrating local data, stakeholder input, and advanced modelling to support equitable climate resilience planning in cities.

The workshop also featured keynotes and case studies from partner projects, and concluded with thematic discussions on semantic interoperability and the legal-organisational challenges of integrating climate data across EOSC and federated data spaces. Insights from the event will feed into upcoming deliverables and strategic dialogues, including ECCA 2025 and the EOSC Opportunity Area 2 Expert Group.

💡 We also acknowledge our colleagues and speakers for their insightful contributions:

🔍 Jesse DeMaria-Kinney (Adaptation Research Alliance) on adaptation research gaps,
🌐 Miruna Stoicescu (EUMETSAT) on the Destination Earth digital twin initiative,
🎤 Simon Hodson and Matti Heikkurinen (CA4EOSC, CODATA), who presented the vision of Climate Adapt 4 EOSC and led a deep dive into semantic and technical interoperability challenges within EOSC,
