Sitia, located in Eastern Crete, is a climate hotspot known for its rare flora and fauna as well as its unique geological landscapes.

Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Sitia. Throughout the rest of the week, the 5th Summer School on Geosites & Sustainability will be held at the Geopark. 🏝️

Researchers from the Environmental Research Laboratory (Climate EREL) at NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”​ will be on site to represent the Regions4Climate and Med-IREN projects, contributing with key presentations:

🔹 Participatory water balance modelling in climate-vulnerable zones, with a focus on Sitia, presented by Thanasis Sfetsos
🔹 Flood risk assessment before and after implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS), presented by Ioannis Zarikos
